Young Mother’s Battle
with DVT

September, 38, and her family take full advantage of the outdoor activities in their hometown of Carson City, Nevada enjoying family hikes, camping trips and biking in the state’s historic capitol city. As a mother to three children, September has no trouble keeping her daily schedule filled with commitments and events that have her on the go throughout the week.

In November, one month after the birth of her son, September finished a typical day at her home with some light house cleaning before sitting down for dinner with her family. The next day she noticed slight pain in her right hip that she related to the housework from the prior afternoon and figured the pain would subside over the course of the day. However, the following day September’s pain was severely worse with redness and swelling down her entire right leg. It was evident something was wrong, and she went directly to the emergency department at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

At the hospital, a duplex ultrasound of September’s right leg showed a large deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that forms in the deep veins of the body that can block blood flow out of the legs, leading to swelling and pain. Dr. Erik Maki was consulted and recommended intervention with ClotTriever, a mechanical thrombectomy device used for the treatment of DVT, to remove the large clot burden without the use of thrombolytics or “clot busting” drugs that are associated with an increased risk of bleeding.

The one-hour procedure was successfully completed the next day and September was discharged from the hospital two days later. “The unbearable pain throughout my entire leg was immediately relieved after the clot was removed. My leg color and size were both normal a few hours after the procedure” said September regarding her treatment with ClotTriever.

September is doing well and back to keeping busy with her family. “I am grateful for the emergency room physicians and Dr. Maki for the care they provided me. I feel incredibly fortunate to return to full health after my DVT” said September.

Dr. Erik Maki’s Testimonial

“September presented to the emergency department with extensive DVT, which extended from her external iliac vein through the distal right lower extremity. Due to the iliofemoral involvement, intervention was indicated.”
